It has got 996 Turbo model’s front-end, only available in Carrera GT Silver exterior paint, Variocam Plus, special dynamic sealed panels, and special logo “40 jahre 911” on the back. There was only 1,963 units available, in order to remind the first year of the Porsche 911.

The “40th Anniversary 911” special edition is marking the climax of the outstanding career of what is known as the “996” internally at Porsche. It is based on the rear-wheel drive 911 Carrera Coupé and it has sport suspension and many high-quality equipment features.

The 911 anniversary model is available exclusively in GT silver metallic – a color that was only available until now for the 612-hp Carrera GT high-performance sports car.

The 911 anniversary edition is in excellent shape for its 40 years birthday. Distinguishing styling features are the front cooling air openings adopted from the Porsche 911 Turbo. The side air intake grilles at the front are painted in same color than body, GT silver metallic. Other cool and expressive styling details are the left and right sill trims, the shot-blasted, polished 18-inch Carrera wheels and the high-gloss polished exhaust tailpipes. A sliding sunroof and the bi-xenon headlights with washing system complete the exterior features. This model was the only Porsche 911 model since the 1980’s to actually badgeted “911”. There is an aluminium “911” logo on the engine cover at the rear.

Special Edition 911 model is equipped with an optional sports exhaust system featuring integral sports tailpipes. The system offers a choice of sound settings, which are selected using a sport button on the centre console. The exhaust system on Porsche 40th Anniversary 911 model is made from high-quality stainless steel. The system consists of two separate tracts, one for each bank of cylinders. The catalytic converters are extremely heat-resistant yet quick to warm up when starting from cold.

Twin oxygen sensors, one for each exhaust, provide continuous monitoring of the combustion process. An additional pair of sensors is used to measure the efficiency of the catalytic converters.

The 3,6 liter boxer engine has a power output of 254 kW equalling full 345 horsepower. Output is 25 bhp more than the regular 911 Coupé. It can be feeled particularly in the higher engine speed range, which is perfect for drivers with a sporty driving habits. The direct accelerator pedal linkage guarantees a spontaneous rpm response. This nice modification makes the 911 Special Edition one second faster when accelerating from 0 to 200 km/h (16.5 sec). Cars top speed increases by 5 km/h to 290 km/h and makes it the second fastest naturally aspirated Porsche model in the 911 product line.

The special editon 911’s body has been lowered by 10 millimeters compared with the standard 911 model. It  has also firmer suspension, leading to even more sporty road behavior and a more direct driving experience. An extra mechanical rear-axle differential lock (with a locking effect of 22 percent in the traction and 27 percent in the coasting mode) results in even better traction at the driven rear wheels and of course, optimum acceleration potential. The electronic Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system also comes as standard gear.

The interior is trimmed in special soft dark gray natural leather. The 40 years anniversary model of course has sport seats, with seat heating. I am considering purchasing a 2004 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Coupe with about 40k miles. How much would it cost to do the IMS upgrade as a preventive measure. Thanks.

        Absolutely love it.
Bought with 78,000 miles 2 1/2 years ago from the Porache dealer in Nashville Tenn. I’ve put almost 30,000 miles on since love it.

No major problems. Can you explain this upgrade, the $1800 one you talk about in this article? Thank you
